Torah Portion – Week 37 25 – 26

Welcome brothers and sisters to week 37, Shelach, SEND YOU

This portion tells the story of the twelve spies sent to assess the promised land, commandments about offerings, the story of the violation of the Sabbath, and the commandment of the tzitzit.

Numbers 13: 

13:16 – It is interesting that Caleb, the Kenizite (Edomite) was named as the leader of Judah.  He was grafted in – Verses

13:29 – What’s keeping us today? (Giants are a metaphor for many situations in life) – Verses

14:11 – Believing –  Verses

14:12 – Yah chose Moses for a reason; humbleness.

The Ten Temptations of YHWH

    1.    At the Red Sea

Fear and accusation against Moses, doubting deliverance.

Exodus 14:11–12

    2.    At Marah

Complaining because the water was bitter.

Exodus 15:23–24

    3.    In the Wilderness of Sin

Murmuring over lack of food, longing for Egypt.

Exodus 16:2–3

    4.    Keeping manna overnight

Disobeying the command not to store manna.

Exodus 16:19–20

    5.    Gathering manna on the Sabbath

Violating the Sabbath command.

Exodus 16:27–28

    6.    At Rephidim (Massah and Meribah)

Quarreling and testing YHWH over water.

Exodus 17:1–7

    7.    The Golden Calf

Idolatry while Moses was on Sinai.

Exodus 32:1–10

    8.    Complaining at Taberah

General grumbling that provoked fire from YHWH.

Numbers 11:1–3

    9.    Craving meat at Kibroth Hattaavah

Rejecting YHWH’s provision and despising His care.

Numbers 11:4–34

    10.    The refusal to enter the land after the spies’ report

Open rebellion, unbelief, and desire to return to Egypt.

14:35 – Think about our time now; what is all that different than the Israelites in the wilderness?  Are we not being tested?  Will we enter into N.Jerusalem with filthy hands?

14:42 – You’re Too late principle (He could have welcomed their late obedience if he wanted to)

14:45 “Hormah” meaning “broken rock”, “banned”, or “devoted to destruction”

Numbers 15:

Abba offers reconciliation immediately after punishment and loss (Parenting tip alert!)

Grain, oil and wine with animals

•    Blood represents life and atonement

    •    Grain represents labor, sustenance, and provision

    •    Oil represents richness, blessing, and often the Spirit

    •    Wine represents joy and covenant celebration

  • YHWH is showing that approaching Him is not only about death and forgiveness, but also about life, obedience, provision, and joy.
  • This directly counters any idea that worship is purely transactional or purely symbolic. It is embodied, material, and relational.

15:16 – No racism! – Verses

  • Wearing of the tzitzit is a small request, can we follow it?
